The Tiger's Wife/ La Femme du Tigre - Téa Obreht (2010)

The war started quietly, its beginning subdued by the decade we had spent on the precipice, waiting for it to come. Kids at school would say "any day now" without knowing what they were talking about, repeating what they had been hearing for years at home. First came the election and then the riots, the assassination of a minister, the massacre at the delta, and then came Sarobor-and after Sarobor, it was like something loosening, a release.

Since its publication, The Tiger's Wife has garnered much praise. This positive reception has been, in my opinion, amply merited. Obreht's novel exudes a unique beauty that gives it a mesmerizing power which few books have. The story takes place in the Balkan Peninsula as a young doctor, Natalia, travels across the new border (her country has been parted as the result of war) to carry on a health mission in an orphanage. The strange events taking place in the village where she is staying added to the death of her grandfather whom she loved dearly bring her to reflect on her memories, which include the many intriguing stories her grandfather has shared with her. As events unfold in the village, Natalia goes over those stories in her head, reconstructing the events of her grandfather's tumultuous life. In particular, she tries to piece together the events that took place one winter when he was a child and a tiger who escaped from a zoo terrorized his village, with the exception of one deaf-mute girl, who somehow befriended the beast. Obreht manages to compose a great tale of love, hate, friendship and defiance that hovers between stark realism and enthralling fantasy while offering the culture of her homeland a vibrant homage.

La Femme du Tigre a reçu de nombreux éloges depuis sa publication. Cette réception positive est, à mon avis, amplement méritée. Le roman de Téa Obreht dégage une beauté unique qui lui confère un pouvoir de fascination que peu de livres ont. L’histoire se déroule dans les Balkans et suit une jeune doctoresse, Natalia, durant une mission médicale dans un orphelinat situé derrière la frontière nouvellement tracée (une des conséquences de la récente guerre). Les étranges évènements qui ont lieu dans le village où elle séjourne, ainsi que la mort de son grand-père, dont elle était très proche, vont amener Natalia à se replonger dans ses souvenirs, en particulier dans les curieuses histoires que son grand-père lui a racontées. Alors que, dans le village, les choses suivent leur cours, Natalia médite sur ces histoires, tentant de reconstruire la tumultueuse existence de son grand-père. En particulier, elle s’efforce de reconstituer les évènements d'un hiver qui a marqué l’enfance de celui-ci et durant lequel un tigre échappé d’un zoo a terrorisé les habitants de son village, à l’exception notable d’une jeune femme sourde-muette qui est parvenue, on ne sait comment, à se lier d’amitié avec le fauve. Téa Obreht a réussi à composer une merveilleuse histoire d’amour, de haine, d’amitié et de méfiance tantôt crument réaliste, tantôt à la lisière du fantastique, tout en offrant à la culture de sa terre d’origine un magnifique hommage.
