After suffering a cerebral hemorrhage, a film director, Maud Schoenberg, is left with hemiparesis. However, her state doesn't stop her from planning her next movie. One night, as she's browsing through TV channels, she stumbles upon an interview of a former crook, Vilko Piran, who managed to trick his way into 185 million euros. Enticed by his charisma and nerve she decides to hire him for her next movie. They soon become very close. Maud, who can't stand to inspire pity, appreciates Vilko's relaxed and even insolent attitude towards her and favors him over her family and friends. But soon, Vilko convinces her to write checks for him, first asking for "advances" on the movie, then claiming that he knows of good investment opportunities. We witness as this smart, independent minded woman somehow succumbs to the charm of this smooth con man. The plot is inspired by events from Breillat's life.

Après une hémorragie cérébrale, Maud Schoenberg, réalisatrice de cinéma, souffre d’hémiplégie. Ne souhaitant pas pour autant arrêter de travailler, elle commence à penser à son prochain projet. Une nuit, elle tombe par hasard sur l’interview télévisée d’un escroc, Vilko Piran, qui déclare avoir réussi à soustraire 185 millions d’euros à ses victimes. Fascinée par son culot et son charisme, Maud décide d’embaucher Vilko pour son prochain film. Ils deviennent vite très proche. Maud, qui ne supporte pas d’être prise en pitié, apprécie l’attitude détendue voire insolente de Vilko vis-à-vis d’elle et commence à le préférer à sa famille et à ses autres amis. Mais rapidement, Vilko parvient à la convaincre de lui faire des chèques. Se contentant au départ de demander des avances sur le film qu’ils feront ensemble, il prétexte ensuite des investissements juteux pour lui demander de plus en plus d’argent. Le spectateur observe, impuissant, comment cette femme intelligente et indépendante succombe au charme de cet exquis arnaqueur. L’histoire s’inspire des démêlées de Catherine Breillat avec Christophe Rocancourt.
